Jubilee Line upgrade news

Many residents will have read press reports over the summer saying that works to modernise the signals on the Jubilee Line could run into 2010 which may mean that there will be no service to or from North Greenwich tube over weekends in the New Year.

The modernisation works to the Jubilee Line are necessary as they will allow trains to run closer together and will increase capacity on the line by up to 35 per cent.

However, the regular weekend closures of the line are causing real inconvenience - for residents, visitors to the O², and also for those who have to get to and from work on time on Saturdays and Sundays.

I have written to the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson (who chairs Transport for London, which runs the Tube), to urge him to ensure that the engineering work is completed on schedule, and to say when the increased number of trains on this vitally important tube line can start running.

I have also met with Tube Lines, the company responsible for maintaining the Jubilee Line, to stress the importance of them completing the upgrade by the New Year as planned.
