Nick recently visited Millennium Performing Arts in Woolwich to meet budding young performers and to talk about the success of the school.

The school relocated in November 2008 to Woolwich from Camden. Directors Ikky Maas, Jacki Mitchell and Donald McLennan told Nick how impressed they had been with Woolwich, which offers lower rents and rapidly improving transport links with other parts of London. They also highlighted the warm welcome they had received from the people of Woolwich.

Their new premises on Thomas Street, formerly occupied by Greenwich University, provide extensive studio and performance space. Pop-star Will Young was obviously impressed, for he recently shot his latest music video there!

Courses include certificates and diplomas involving a range of performing arts, from jazz to modern dance. Young people throughout the borough and beyond are encouraged to audition for a place, particularly students from less-privileged backgrounds and ethnic minorities. Director Jacki commended the Dance and Drama Awards, scholarships funded by the Learning and Skills Council. Arts schools bid for these Government-funded scholarships as part of the Widening and Participation Scheme (WPS).  

Nick says: I have no doubt that Millennium Performing Arts’ success in its bid was down to both the fantastic reputation of the school coupled and the excellent location of Woolwich. The school is an example of how young people from all backgrounds can get involved in the performing arts. I am very proud that Millennium Performing Arts are now well established in Woolwich and are developing their school so successfully in our local community’.
